Draft for legal review

This policy describes how the service is built. It has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer and must be reviewed before public launch.

The short version

  • Memorials are private by default. Only people the owner invites can see them.
  • We collect only what we need to run the service.
  • We don't sell personal information, and we don't use memorial content to train AI models.
  • You can export or delete your data at any time from your account settings.

What we collect

  • Account details: your email address, a display name, and a securely hashed password (handled by our authentication provider).
  • Memorial content you add: names, dates, photographs, stories, obituaries, event details, RSVPs and tasks.
  • Purchase records: what you bought, when, and the amount. Card details are handled by our payment processor (Stripe); we never see or store your card number. For printed items, we receive the shipping address you provide.
  • Aggregate counts: daily totals such as “memorials created” — with no names, user ids or IP addresses attached.

We treat photographs, family relationships, dates of birth and death, and memorial details as sensitive personal information.

How we use it

  • To provide the service: showing memorials to the people allowed to see them, sending invitations you ask us to send, and delivering purchases.
  • To send service emails, such as event updates you've chosen to receive. You can turn these off in your settings.
  • To keep the service secure, including rate limits and an audit log of sensitive actions (such as permission changes).

Who can see a memorial

  • Private: signed-in members the owner has invited.
  • Unlisted: anyone with the link can view the shared parts (published photos and memories, shared events, approved obituary). Links can be forwarded. Owners can replace the link at any time.
  • Public: anyone can view the shared parts. Search engines may list the page only if the owner also allows indexing; after indexing is turned off, search engines can take time to remove it.
  • Funeral homes can manage a memorial only if they created it or the owner granted access with the funeral home's partner code. The owner can remove that access.

Optional writing assistant

If the writing assistant is enabled and you choose to use it, the details you type into it are sent to our AI provider to produce a draft. We ask for your confirmation each time. We use providers whose terms do not permit training on this content, and we don't use it for training ourselves.

Service providers

We rely on a small number of providers to run the service: database, authentication and file storage; payment processing; email delivery; website hosting; and (only if you use it) the writing assistant. They process data on our behalf to provide these functions.

Retention and deletion

We keep your data while your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete memorials you own (including their photos), your contributions to other memorials, and your profile. We keep limited purchase records where the law requires us to, with your account link removed. Backups are overwritten on a rolling schedule.

Your choices

  • Download a copy of your data from Account → Your data.
  • Delete your account from the same page.
  • Change email notification preferences at any time.

Children

The service is intended for adults. Accounts may not be created by anyone under 16.
